ECONOMY NEWS

The S&P 500 Increasingly Looks Like Two Stock Markets

  • Jim Bianco: The S&P 500 has effectively become two markets: an AI-related cohort and a non-AI cohort, with AI concentration now exceeding nearly every historical concentration episode except the 19th-century railroad boom. Beyond concentration, the slightly negative recent correlation between the two groups suggests investors are experiencing materially different market environments, underscoring that broad index exposure already embeds a significant AI bet.

MARKETS NEWS

The Stock Market ≠ The Economy

  • Sam Ro: The stock market and the economy are closely linked, but they are not the same: the S&P 500 is dominated by large, globally diversified public companies, especially technology firms, while GDP and employment reflect the far broader U.S. economy, including government activity and labor-intensive sectors. As a result, economic headlines and stock market performance can diverge significantly, highlighting the importance of distinguishing between market outcomes and underlying economic conditions.

CHART OF THE WEEK

US Fiscal Debt Maturity on the Short End

The US finances itself with notably shorter-dated debt than its peers: according to the IMF, T-bills make up close to 60% of gross borrowing and the average maturity is about six years, compared with more than 13 years in the UK, which puts annual refinancing needs near 31% of GDP. As a result, US government funding costs are more sensitive to changes in short-term interest rates and could be poorly positioned for a ‘higher for longer’ interest rate environment.
